People tend to overlook interfacial phenomena such as wettability, adhesion, surface tension, dispersion, and emulsion in their daily lives. But these phenomena do play a significant role in various fields of companies to create added value to products that can improve the customer’s experience and make their lives better and easier.

Soon after the establishment in 1947, Kyowa started to manufacture two kinds of measuring instruments: The Contact Angle Meter to evaluate wettability and the Tensiometer to determine the surface tension, which is a critical factor affecting the wettability. In the more than 60 years since the sale of the first Tensiometer, we have constantly been creating new products and evolving unique measuring techniques for practical use with our products.

In rapidly evolving industries, such as semiconductors, nanotechnology, and flat panel display, surface tension and wettability evaluation are essential to the quality improvement of highly functional materials.

The wet coating process is a widely used technique in the mass production of functional raw materials. However, throughout the whole coating process flow, troubles may occur at interfaces between different materials. By identifying and properly controlling these individual interface surfaces, the optimization of the product quality becomes possible.

In most cases, functional materials are present in powders, such as nanoparticles and fillers, before being used as intermediate products and subsequently incorporated in the final product. Then, the powders are blended into liquids to create consistent, homogenous fine particle dispersions, which will be applied to substrates by any known method to obtain coating films with the desired properties.

To achieve optimum coating conditions, high-quality coating films and receive accurate feedback on the quality evaluation of the finished coating film, controlling surfaces and interfaces is necessary throughout the whole process in correspondence with the required characteristics of each application.
